Get Your Dog Groomed at Best Friends and Help Clean up the Oil Spill in the Gulf!

A non profit organization called Matter of Trust is collecting donations of clean hair and fur of all kinds to clean up the oil in the ocean. Hair is hydrophobic which means it repels water, it is also great for absorbing oil (greasy hair means that hair collects oil). So Matter of Trust has volunteers making devices called hair mats and hair booms out of recycled hair and nylons- which are then placed in the water to soak up the oil.

Schedule your dog for a grooming today.  Best Friends Pet Care will be donating all hair clippings to Matter of Trust to assist in the Oil Spill clean up.  Give us a call at 856-661-0707 and start saving the world!

Here is the video that was posted on youtube.com explaining what Matter of Trust is doing and how it works!!

Fun Kitty Fact

Just in case you were wondering, male cats tend to be left pawed and female cats tend to be right pawed when it comes to complex behaviors. Researchers at Queen's University Belfast observed 42 cats as they tried to get kitty treats out of a jar. Playtime on the other hand, is a different story. Cats tend to bat their toys around-wether in the air or on the floor-with both their right and left paws.

Now thats one big bunny!!

With Easter just around the corrner, I thought this might be a cute story to get us in the Easter Bunny spirit! I found it at Pawnation.com

Weighing in at over forty pounds, this English rabbit might just be the biggest bunny the world has ever seen.
Ralph, a Continental Giant rabbit, eats about $15 worth of food a day, says his owner Pauline Grant. The bunny consumes Weetabix cereal, crackers, apples, carrots, cabbages, toast, sweetcorn and huge bowls of rabbit food. Grant told the U.K's Sky News that she's still awaiting official confirmation of his stats, but she's hoping he will make it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
If his size is confirmed at 42 pounds and 4 feet in length, he'll knock his own mother out of the record books. According to the folks at Guinness, Ralph's dam, Amy, was listed in 2008 as the world's longest rabbit" at 2 feet, 8 inches.
Known for being a larger breed than most, Continental Giants typically weigh between 12 and 16 pounds. The minimum length of a show rabbit is 25.5 inches.
As long as Ralph continues with his voracious appetite, Grant says she'll keep feeding him. How long do you think this record will last?

Groundhog Day 2010! 6 more weeks of winter...

Heres a cute story about Punxsutawney Phil, PA's most famous Groundhog from the National Geographic
website:

"Groundhog Day is a lot like a rock concert but the people are better behaved and there's a groundhog involved," said Tom Chapin, editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper.

"There's music and entertainment, spoofs of game shows, and people shooting t-shirts and Beanie Babies" into the crowd, he said.

Tradition has it that if Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his temporary burrow—a simulated tree stump at the rural site of Gobbler's Knob—on February 2 and sees his shadow, winter weather will continue for six more weeks across the United States. But if Phil doesn't see his shadow, then spring temperatures are just around the corner.

Regardless of the weather prediction, on Groundhog Day, Phil "speaks" to his human caretakers, known as the Inner Circle, in Groundhogese and tells them his forecast. The Inner Circle then translates Phil's words for the world to hear—or so they say.

Whatever he says on February 2, "immortal" Punxsutawney Phil—supposedly born no later than the 19th century—will get his 2010 message out in some decidedly 21st-century ways, by texting his forecast for the first time and, of course, updating his Facebook status.

In 1887 a group of groundhog hunters from Punxsutawney dubbed themselves the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club and declared their furry oracle, Punxsutawney Phil, the one and only "official" weather-prognosticating groundhog. The Punxsutawney ceremony originated around the same time.

More than a hundred years later, Punxsutawney Phil remains the star of Groundhog Day, though rivals such as Staten Island Chuck and Gen. Beauregard Lee maintain regional fame.

According to Punxsutawney folklore, Phil owes his 123-year-plus lifespan to an "elixir of life," served every summer at the annual Groundhog Picnic, of which there are curiously no photographs.

Despite the Inner Circle's claims, such longevity would make Punxsutawney Phil a statistical anomaly, to say the least—groundhogs in captivity typically live no longer than about ten years, which suggests Phil's name, passed down like "Lassie," may be the only immortal thing about him. Then again, Phil, weighing in at 20 pounds (9 kilograms) versus the usual 13 (6 kilograms), is anything but ordinary.

When he's not predicting the weather, Punxsutawney Phil makes his home at the Groundhog Zoo, an annex of the town library.

American Kennel Club announces top breeds of 2009

Yesterday the American Kennel Club announced the top dog breeds of 2009. What number did your favorite come in? Here is the article from their website:

For the 19th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in America, but could this be the last year for the Lab’s reign?

According to American Kennel Club® (AKC) 2009 registration statistics released today during a press conference at Grand Central Terminal in New York City, the German Shepherd Dog overtook the Yorkshire Terrier last year and is now ranked second most popular in the nation for the first time in more than three decades.

An American favorite since the time of Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd Dog became the number one breed of the 1920s, but then slipped in popularity until after World War II.
"Labs have been America’s top dog for nearly two decades due to their loyal and gentle nature," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "But the German Shepherd Dog has gained ground recently, quite possibly due to the increased attention they receive for their security efforts at home and abroad. Hailed as the world’s leading police, guard and military dog, this energetic and fun-loving breed is a loyal family pet, ideal companion and dependable K-9 partner when duty calls."

2009 Most Popular Dogs in the U.S.
1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd Dog
3. Yorkshire Terrier
4. Golden Retriever
5. Beagle
6. Boxer
7. Bulldog
8. Dachshund
9. Poodle
10. Shih Tzu

Sal the cat gets called for Jury Duty!

How funny is this!  Its not enough that we have to dread going to jury, now our pets have to deal with it too! I came across this story from news feed on AOL.com

"We all know jury duty is just about impossible to avoid, but what about purr-y duty? An East Boston cat and his family are determined to find out. Sal Esposito, a cat, is expected to show up at Suffolk Superior Court on March 23, reports The National Ledger.

Anna and Guy Esposito, Sal's owners, were stunned when they received Sal's jury summons in the mail, reports MSNBC News. Anna tried to disqualify Sal, but the jury commissioner rejected the appeal.

The couple thinks the issue stemmed from an error on the last census form. Just like any other member of the family, Anna listed Sal under the "pets" section. "I just wrote 'Sal Esposito', scratched out the 'dog,' and wrote, 'cat,'" Anna told MSNBC News.

If the issue isn't resolved by Sal's court date, Anna will have to bring her cat to the jury box to serve his apparent civil responsibility."
